Edwards goes for another championship against heir apparent
The men's triple jump pits youth versus experience, a rookie versus his hero. Christian Olsson of suddenly jump-crazed Sweden will try to dethrone the great British champion Jonathan Edwards. So which man is the one to beat?
"Edwards for sure," says former decathlete and CBC analyst Michael Smith. "He's the best this year. He's not in the same form he was in a few years michael kors bags ago, and there is also Olsson, who has youth on his side. It will be interesting to see if Edwards where to buy toms can hang on through his age and injuries, being a wily veteran."
Edwards certainly has the credentials on his side. He has four world triple http://michaelkorsstoreinuk.webs.com/ jump medals - a gold in 1995, silver in 1997 and bronze in 1993 and 1999. After settling for silver at the 1996 Olympics, Edwards finally won Olympic gold last year in Sydney. If those accomplishments weren't enough, he also owns the world record of 18.29m, which he set at the 1995 world championships.
Edwards had some problems with fouling earlier in the season due to a new lengthened approach he was using, but that has since ironed itself out. His two best jumps of the years came at the UK trials (17.59) and at a meet in Glasgow (17.66). The seasoned competitor hasn't slowed down this season, either. Ranked first by the IAAF, Edwards was victorious at Grand Prix meets in London and Stockholm and placed second at the Helsinki, where he lost to Olsson.
In that meet, the 21-year-old Swede overcame unfavourably rainy and cold conditions to beat michael kors purses his idol with a jump of 17.08m.
"It was extra special to do more than 17 metres lululemon under such bad conditions and to beat the Olympic champion, all in the same evening," he said at the time.
Olsson, a former European junior high jump champion, won the gold medal at the Under-23 European championships this year in Amsterdam, jumping 17.24m, but he also has the fourth-best in the world this year. Since mid-June, Olsson has not jumped under 17m, showing a consistency that is at times lacking among lv wallet even world-class triple jumpers.
Germany's Charles Michael Friedek, who won in Seville in 1999 when Edwards faltered, is injured and won't be able to defend his world title, but there are a number of potential challengers to Edwards aside from the precocious Olsson.
World Indoor Champion Paolo Camossi of Italy. He defeated Edwards and a strong field of others at the March toms outlet competition, winning with a leap of 17.32m. shouldn't be counted out, even though his best leap of the year is 17.17m. He is a world-class triple jumper capable of longer distances.
Edwards isn't the only British jumper to watch out for, either. Phillips Idowu finished sixth at last year's Sydney Olympics and wants to find himself on the podium in Edmonton. The most flamboyant of the British triple jumpers because of his changing hair colour, Idowu won't reveal what colour he'll be sporting for the World Championships.
Onochie (Larry) Achike, who was fifth in Sydney, is the other Brit who could push for a medal. He's jumped 17.21m this season and finished second to Edwards at the UK trials.
Finally, Cuba's Michael Calvo could be part of the mix with on strong day. But there may be a price to pay for the angry outbursts he directs toward umps, writes Tom Dakers. She's won Olympic gold as a member of Team Canada and now you can add fighting mental illness to the list of things she is taking on
